They use glass so it doesn't break easily or warp.
If you're the one designing the thermometer, you could make it longer or make the bore wider. If you've got an existing thermometer, there's not much you can do.
When it has a thin glass tube so that the heat could get through easily.
Mercury and alcohol are not the thermometers but the liquids found in the thermometer they have different properties that make them uniqe for example alcohol is safe while mercury is poisonous, alcohol does not expand uniformly but has great expansion while mercury expands uniformly and has low expansion, alcohol is cheap while mercury is expensive, alcohol wets the glass while mercury does not.so alcohol can not combine to form a thermometer simply because they are the liquids found in it and not the thermometer itself.
Thomas did NOT make the light bulb. He made a safer impression of it.
Eyeglass lenses could be made of nearly any plastic or glass. For example, some glasses lens, such as my own, are made of a plastic called polycarbonate which is the material used to make bulletproof glass so my glasses are impact resistant. Other eyeglass lenses can be made from other plastics and glasses such as CR-39, Homopolyer and crown glass.
Galileo made the thermometer in 1593.
Galileo Galilei made a water thermometer in 1593.
Because Mercury expands in heat, it is more accurate than other elements used in thermometers.
no it was not made by accident. it was made by daniel gabriel fahrenheit. he wanted to make something to measure how hot or cold it is in a specific area. that is how the thermometer was invented.
The stem of the thermometer is not perfectly round for two reasons. One so it will not roll off and fall, and two, the flat area acts as a magnifying glass to make the hollow shaft in the stem appear larger.
man made
Yes. People make glass by applying fire to sand.
Great question to think about ! Seems to me that if the expansion of glass were greater than the expansion of mercury, then you could easily make thermometers. But when you calibrated them, they would turn out different from what we have now, because the warmer temperatures would be marked lower on the glass, and the cooler temperatures would be marked higher on the glass.
No a cork is made of a lightweight material and a glass of water isn't heavy.
Fiber glass is a synthetic building material. It is really made of glass, but is processed in such a way as to be strong, light weight, and durable. My tennis raquet is made of fiber glass. Speed boats made of fiber glass really go fast. Fiber glass makes good insulation.

The homonym for "glass" is "glass", as it refers to both a material made from silica used to make containers and windows, as well as a drinking container.
