People do not die because of the HIV virus itself. They die because of the damage the HIV virus does to the immune system.
The HIV virus targets cells that are part of our defense system, CD4 or T-helper cells. These are the cells that fight infection. However, when these are destroyed, the body is vulnerable to infections, more commonly known as opportunitistic infections.
As the name implies, these infections take advantage of the fact that the immune system is weak and cannot fight them off. Therefore, a person is likely to die of pneumonia or cancer related to their HIV infection rather than the virus itself.
