Why is a saint made a patron?

Usually, it has to do with something that they were associated with, when they were alive.

Eg: St. Maria Goretti is the Patron Saint of rape victims.

St. Joseph of Arimathea (sp.) is the Patron Saint of funeral directors, because he gave his own tomb to the Christ.

St. Joan of Arc is the Patron Saint of France, because she helped France overcome England when it almost conquered France during the 100 years war.
