A sentence is a sentence because it has a subject and a verb and punctuation at the end (period, question mark, exclamation point) and is a complete thought or idea. Beyond that, sentences can have more parts of speech added and be long or short.

For example:

Jane swam.

Jane swam in the river.

Needing to get some exercise, Jane swam in the cool water of the river.

In some cases, the subject of the sentence is implied.

For example:

(You) Go and buy the groceries.

(You) Sit down and do your homework.

More information:

A sentence is a sentence because it has a subject (noun or noun phrase), a predicate ( verb) and punctuation as well as the other parts of speech like pronouns ( she, it him, her, they, them) adjectives (describes a nouns), predicates, linking verbs, and compound subjects. All of this combined makes a basic sentence. Without the subject or predicate there isn't a sentence. It needs to be a complete thought or idea to be a sentence.
