The procedure for taking a patient's temperature by mouth with a mercury thermometer is similar to the axillary method except that the silver tip of the thermometer is placed beneath the tongue for four to five minutes before being read.
It isn't necessary with new electronic thermometers, but if you still have an old hold-under-your-tongue-for-three-minutes mercury thermometer, the mercury will remain at the last recorded temperature until it is shaken back into the reservoir.
Prior to digital, thermometers werre made of a glass tube with numbers on it to indicate the temp. Inside the glass tube there was liquid mercury which would rise to the appropriate number when the temp was being taken under the arm, under the tongue or in the rectum.
