Violins have a smooth neck and doesn't have frets, though people have used small bits of tape to mark where the different notes are (pencil marks work as well, though they will need to be done over every once in a while). Fretted instruments have frets, obviously, that show where every note is on the fingerboard/neck of the instrument.
