Answer

Doctors noticed mood improvement in some eipilepsy patients. Anticonvulsants work by calming hyperactivity in the brain in various ways. Some anti-convulsant medications are Depakote, Tegretol, Lamictal, Trileptal and some newer drugs. Each drug acts on the brain in different ways.

Studies suggest that Epilepsy and Bipolar Affective Disorder may be related conditions caused by similar neurochemical states. The drugs which stabilize the broader neurologic dysfunctions in eplileptic patients can help stabilize the more narrowly defined neurochemical imbalances in Bipolar patients.
