Can beef jerky be made in a microwave oven?

Beef put in the microwave at 170-200 degrees for 3-5 minutes. Constantly check and flip the meat to ensure even cooking.

How much water does beef jerky contain?

If done correctly, none. In order for it to be "jerky" it has to be water free or without moisture. This keeps bacteria from being able to form and reproduce. Certain store brands of beef jerky have additives and oils that can make the product have a "best used by" date. These can be harmful as they can have bacteria form on them and eating them after that date can make one sick. The best way to make beef jerky is to make your own. Its cheaper and much healthier. You are not going to find levels of 0% water in any food, though it can get close. Freeze dried or vacuum dried foods are the closest to zero. See Related Links. Even our cat's dry food is ~10% moisture.

Why is beef jerky so expensive?

The main reason is that all jerky is costly to make. Beef is about 60% water, so when it is dried most of the weight is evaporated. It takes about 2.5 Lbs of quality beef to make 1 Lb of jerky. Secondly, many jerky companies use expensive chemicals and preservatives when making their jerky, and they have a lot of waste just based on how they make it. I love beef jerky too, so here's the secret: Go to Walmart or Bass Pro Shops and buy a $40 dehydrator. Then go to your supermarket and buy meat ask the meat department to slice it super-duper thin for you. Marinate it overnight in whatever thrills you in the fridge and the next day put it in the dehydrator, give it 12 hours and voila! - you have a much healthier and better tasting jerky. I make my own out of chicken, turkey, salmon, beef, etc....

Does dehydrated jerky that is vacuum packed need to be refrigerated or frozen for storage?

Probably no refrigeration needed if the package has not been opened. No. Even after opening, no. Beef jerky if done properly has no water left in it. Bacteria cannot survive without water. Hooweestik.

What can you make with jerky?

anything.... even god

How many pounds of beef does it take to make a pound of beef jerky?

This isn't an official answer as I am looking for just that now but on one forum I just read, someone said it's about 3 to 1 or 3 pounds of beef equals about 1 pound of jerky. I'm gonna make my own today and will update with an answer when I know for sure. Also, keep in mind, it's not a static number, different types of meat and probably even different meat of the same cut won't always have the exact same same fresh to dehydrated weight ratio but I am sure there is a generalized number where it's always a little more or a little less then x to y. Hope this helps.

Why sea water cause dehydration?

Sea water has a highconcentration of salinity (salt) which is a common food ingredient that causes dehydration. Salts are sometimes used for curing beef, making beef jerky, and even curing leather. Salt is a natural dehydrator, of sorts. Hence, sea water, if consumed, causes dehydration.

Is beef a producer or a consumer?

It is a consumer. Even though we eat it, a producer is something that gets its food from the sun. Beef doesn't get its energy from the sun. It gets its energy from a producer, grass.
