in my mind it boils down to two reasons. Either bigfoot doesn't exist or it lives where few people can see them. Part of the latter reason would be that it can blend in with it's surroundings.

Like most animals the bigfoot could have a hightened sense of smell and hearing. The only time when you hear of sightings is when they are preoccupied.

If scientists don't believe in bigfoot they will do their best to explain it away.

The gaurilla wasn't known by europeans until 1847.
