Why is biodiversity important for evolution?

There are sevarel reasons for extinction. They include

1. over hunting
2. for dinos huge volcano eruptions that block out the sun for extended periods
3. Large asteroid strikes
4. Abrupt climate change
5. nuclear war

I would have to say that extinction isn't vitally important to the success of evolution. After all if some primitive species manages to survive it doesn't really matter to those species that are evolving with success.

HOWEVER there maybe some minor factors to extinction that have an influence on the evolution of successful species.

• Providing a food source for predator species.
• Providing a competitive pressure to the more successful species.
• Providing some environmental influence.
• If the unsuccessful members are still breeding in the general population then it would be important to evolution to have their genes removed from the gene-pool. Extinction would do this - but there are other means by which this is done- such as mate selection.

My Answer

Extinction is actually hugely important to evolution. New species require a chance to flourish and therefore cannot have competition for its resources. Therefore, a dominating species must first die out for a new species to survive.
