Queen Victoria wore black when her husband died and the Victorians began the tradition of black as the color for mourning. For the rest of her life she dressed only in black. Several mourning items also became popular for Victorians. Pins / broaches containing a deceased love ones hair were made and hair bracelets were made. The Victorians would also keep a picture out of the deceased person dead out to view. The Victorians fascination for death affected everyday life. There were strict rules about acceptable dresses. There were mourning fans, handkerchiefs, jet brooch and earrings, and symbolic pins. Tiny skulls watch fobs were given as funeral gifts.
