An ac unit that has copper pipes can freeze up just as other pipes can freeze up. Once the unit freezes, you need to turn them off.

How would you know if you need a freon charge for your AC?

Pressure gauges. In a home or car AC there is small pipe and a large pipe going to the compressor unit outside or in the engine compartment. The large pipe should be cold and "sweating" ( dripping water).

How cold should be copper lines on ac unit?

There is no real set temp for the lines ,the bigger thing is the heat that the outside unit is producing when the unit is on. A normal functional AC unit will be around 105 to 110 degrees as for the copper lines they should feel pretty cold to the touch like an ice colds beer feels in your hand......

with a set of freon guages. The smaller copper pipe should be warm to hot. The larger copper pipe should be cold and in hot humid weather dripping water from condensation. what should the guages read.

What is wrong if your home ac vents have water drops on them and the ac runs 24 hours and only cools to 74 degrees in a 575 sq ft 2nd floor condo?

possibles: fan speed too slow, clogged filter, clogged fins on ac unit inside or outside house, low freon, poor or no insulation in attic, walls and floor joists, downstairs occupant not using air conditioning, poor weather sealing. Did it ever cool better than now? undersized AC unit? Larger copper pipe on outside unit should be cold and sweating
