Truman Capote's classic short story, "A Christmas Memory," is semi-autobiographical in nature -- about the time spent with a group of eccentric cousins in Monroeville, Alabama after his own parents had gone their separate ways. His father went to New Orleans and made his way by charming the single women of the community. His mother went to New York in the hope of becoming an actress. So "Buddy" (young Capote) was left in the care of these somewhat distant relatives who gave him a home with them for a few years. He was closest to his much older Cousin Sook, a childlike woman who became his best friend and playmate until life came between them in the form of military school.
