The bullet will not swell- after shooting the bullet has left the barrel. However, the cartridge case may be. The most common reason- it is the wrong cartridge for that gun. A .22 LR catridge fired in a gun chambered for .22 Magnum with swell, and may split.

This can be a major problem when an older gun has been rechambered to a different cartridge- but the markings n the gun have not changed. If the new cartridge is larger than the old- it will swell- may split, may be VERY dangerous.

This can also happen when a chamber is worn- and it is no longer the right size for that cartridge. This usually takes a lot of age and wear for a good quality rifle,

Final thought- not really swelling- but a dirty chamber can make a cartridge stick, Especially some of the European steel cased, lacquer coated rifle ammo. Would clean the chamber very thoroughly with a bronze brush, solvent, and a cordless drill- and then check that you have the right ammo for THAT gun. If those things do not fix the problem, you may have a HEADSPACE problem- have a gunsmith check it.

What is the function of the rifle in shooting an elephant?

Basically, a rifle is a place to direct the explosion of gunpowder directly to the bullet to increase the efficiency of gunpowder so the bullet can travel faster, and increase the bullet's momentum so it does more damage. The rifle also is used to increase the accuracy of the bullet. By focusing the blast directly behind the bullet, the bullet is more likely to travel in the intended direction. Striations in the rifle also spin the bullet so it corkscrews forward, making the path of the bullet straighter.
