Carbon Monoxide bonds preferentially with haemoglobin compared to oxygen. This means that the more Carbon Monoxide that you breathe in, the more oxygen is displaced in your blood, until you do not have enough oxygen to function properly. For this reason, Carbon Monoxide is referred to as an Agent of Anoxia.

CO binds to the molecule found in red blood cells that nOrmally carries oxygen throughout your body. When this happens, your blood's ability to transport oxygen decreases. This, in turn, causes death by asphyxiation.

Because it binds to hemoglobin 230-270 times better than oxygen, even small concentrations of CO can result in significant levels of HbCO. That means that oxygen delivery is not carried out well and the organs will begin to fail. The heart is very sensitive to high levels of CO.
