Celibacy was not an important issue in the early church, but purity was. Peter was married, and Paul had indicated that he had just as much right ot have a wife as did Peter, but that he chose to not do so so that he could be more able to spread the Gospel and to help the people in the churches, which he had established: "Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas (Peter)?" ! Corinthians 9:5.
Note that Paul instructed the young pastor, Timothy, that some had a false doctrine, totally contrary to faith in Christ, in this regards: "Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with Thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth." ! Timothy 4:2,3.

Emperor Theodosius (378-395) was a Christian, like all but one of the Roman emperors since Constantine. Paganism was weakened by almost a century of persecution and could no longer resist Christian domination. Theodosius could declare the public worship of pagan gods illegal, knowing that the remaining pagans in the empire could not resist him and his Christian supporters.
This would be a difficult statistic to produce since the Catholic Church has held celibacy as part of its priestly discipline, at least in the Latin Rite, for centuries upon centuries. Rarely do priests leave for any single reason, and even if a priest were to leave concerning this issue he might have masked it with another issue such as a concern regarding doctrine or personal matters as he might feel embarrassed to admit it was over celibacy. Regardless, there is no statistic available for this particular issue of discipline. It is worth noting in a related vein that there was a statistically significant number of priests that left the priesthood and became married in the wake of Vatican II. Their decision to leave was not so much a protest to the discipline - as they wished to be laicized with the freedoms and message of the Council as interpreted by them - however it does show there was the presence of this desire to marry in some priests.

How important an issue is to the public
Christianity has the commandment "Love your neighbor as yourself", and "Thou shall not kill". Muslims want the killing of their people to stop.
A key issue is a problem that is very important to what it is relating to.
