However, it's use as a local anesthetic has largely been replaced by benzocaine, lidocaine, novacaine and numerous other local anesthetics. It was and is still used (but not as frequently) for nasal and lacrimal duct surgery. In this setting, it is not perceived as being dangerous.
However, when abused, cocaine has numerous risks. Sharing needles, straws or other supplies used for using coacine can increase the risk of Hepatitis C, HIV and other disease. It is a vasoconstrictor and increases heart rate, which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and other problems with the cardiovascular system. Over many days of use, it can induce psychotic episodes which may persist well after the drug is stopped. Long-term cocaine users who have quit have higher than usual rates of depression, which is a sign that either depressed people start using cocaine, cocaine over a long period of time induces depression or possibly both.
Another issues with cocaine is that it is typically cut with other products. These products are typically harmless. However, this means that the purity of cocaine varies significantly from one person to another which could cause a person to OD if too much of stronger cocaine is used.
