Communion Of Saints
Taking a saint's name at First Communion is a way to choose a patron saint to guide and inspire you on your spiritual journey. It is a tradition in the Catholic Church to adopt a saint's name as a symbol of faith and a reminder of their virtues to strive towards in one's own life.
The Communion of Saints consists of all the baptized Christians on earth (the Church Militant), the baptized in purgatory (The Church Suffering), and those in heaven (The Church Triumphant). One enters the Communion of Saints through the Sacraments of Initiation which consists of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Baptism is the initial entry into the Communion of Saints.
To officially have the title of saint one must be recognized as saint through the canonization process. However, the Communion of Saints includes all named and unnamed saints in Heaven, the souls in Purgatory and those alive who are in a state of grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Technically, there are no saints in Purgatory. They are "saints in waiting" and undergoing a final purging. We honor the souls in Purgatory by praying for them, having Masses said in their honor, offering up sacrifices for the release of their souls.
