They make the story more interesting. Shorn of its complications, you get plots like "The man and woman met, fell in love and married." or "A person was killed, the police were called in and immediately identified the killer" or "The soldiers were ordered to take the enemy's position, which they did."
A complication in a story is an event or obstacle that arises to challenge the main character and drive the plot forward. It creates tension and conflict, pushing the protagonist to take action and overcome the obstacles in their way. Complications are essential for developing a story and maintaining the reader's interest.
The plot complication is often found in the middle to the end of the story. At the very end it is resolved. Some stories however start off with a complication. I would recomend putting the complication in the middle-end.
If you don't have some sort of tension and complication, the story is boring. Who wants to read a long story about a guy who gets up, brushes his hair and teeth, goes to work and comes home without anything at all happening to him?
This section of plot is known as the rising action.
Plot can be dissected into four parts: the exposition, the rising action, the climax, and the falling action. The rising action is when complications begin occurring in the plot. In literary terms, these complications are referred to as conflicts, where one force opposes another. Conflicts can be internal (the main character struggles with his own conscience) or external (the main character battles another person, a group of people, nature, technology, etc.). The development of conflicts is also closely linked to another literary technique: suspense (the feeling the reader has for guessing how the conflicts will unfold). The build-up of suspense is what captures the reader's interest.

Plot conflict is the main problem which is introduced or set up in the beginning, developed in the central part of a novel, and ultimately resolved in the ending of the story.

Minor conflicts (problems) are called Complications. A Complication causes change in the course of the story.
The crisis in the Lightning Thief is when the bolt was stolen from Olympus, which led on to the beginning of the Lightning Thief's story.
it is exposition and complication
an outline of characters and setting which prepares the reader for the conflict.
A solution in the plot of a story means a conclusion to the complication.... or a happy ending. E.g. Fred has an itchy head, the solution would be that he scratches it =D
