It used to (other materials are way cheaper now),

and it was because copper was a good conductor of heat AND it could be worked (soldered) easily.

Where is the radiator cap on a 1996 grand am?

The cooling system on this vehicle does not use a radiator cap on the radiator but on a remote tank. It may have a different (larger) cap on it than what you are used to seeing on the radiator.

Why would your 1996 Nissan Maxima radiator keep busting when you have replaced it three or four times in the past year?

If a head gasket is bad, the pressure of combustion can be transferred into the cooling system. The addition pressure in the cooling system can blow out the radiator. Assuming your not replacing it with a used one. Used radiators are usually temporary.

What is a heater core do?

A heater core is a smaller version of the radiator that allows water used in the cooling system for the engine to be used to heat the interior of the vehicle.

What are the major components of the automotive cooling systems?

Radiator-- for storing and removing heat from the coolant. Pump-- used to circulate coolant throughout the engine and back to the radiator for cooling. Fan, either electric or mechanical -- used to draw air through the radiator thus removing heat. Thermostat--Used to keep the coolant at a set temperature. Radiator pressure cap--Used to keep the pressure at a set amount in the system. Hoses uses to transfer coolant from the radiator to the engine and back. Recovery tank--Used to catch any coolant that may overflow.

What type radiator fluid is used in a 1993 Pontiac Bonneville?

I would flush the cooling system with the heater on, thermistat removed, then rinse and put regular green coolant in it.

What does cooler mean?

A water cooler is a system that is designed to keep water cold for some use. This is done usually through an air cooling radiator system. These water coolers are normally used in cars.

Can you just plug the oil cooling lines at the radiator and engine block and not replace the lines?

The cooling radiator needs to be used to keep the oil from overheating. If the lines are plugged, the engine could be ruined.

Why is it bad to fill your radiator with tap water?

Tap water contains minerals, which can promote corrosion of cooling system components. Therefore, it is NOT recommended that tap water be used when filling a cooling system. Manufacturers typically recommend a 50/50 mixture of distilled/deionized water and proper antifreeze.

What material is used to make a car radiator?

They used to be copper and steel but now they are made of aluminum and plastic.

What tool can be used to check a radiator cap function?

A cooling system pressure tester, which can be found at most auto part stores and places like sears that sell automotive tools.

Can you drive a car with only water in the radiator?

Yes, you can. In fact, pure water is a more effective coolant than any mixture of water and antifreeze. However, it is not recommended that you run pure water in a cooling system for an extended length of time. Not only does antifreeze protect against freezing. It also contains corrosion inhibiters, which help prevent your engine and radiator from succumbing to corrosion. For these reasons, using only water in your cooling system is something you should do only when you have no choice (such as a roadside emergency). However, if pure water is used in a cooling system for this reason, the cooling system should be drained ASAP and refilled with the proper mixture of antifreeze and water.
