While different musicals vary in the amounts of dance in them (anywhere from none to a focus on dance), the style of dance also varies completely based on the choreographical, stylistic, and plot-based influences. The overall "broadway dance style", if it had to be categorized, is most heavily focussed on jazz dance. Ballet is rarely used in musicals (The Phantom of the Opera is one exception.)

Jack Cole was a pioneering figure in the field of modern dance and choreography. He is best known for developing the "jazz dance" style and for his innovative choreography for Broadway musicals, including "Kiss Me, Kate" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Additionally, Cole's influence extended to film, where he choreographed iconic dance sequences for Hollywood musicals, helping to shape the dance styles seen in the industry today. His contributions have left a lasting legacy in both theatre and dance education.
