Diamonds are the hardest natural objects. They are also formed of a symmetrical matrix of all carbon molecules. Diamonds can be formed naturally only with great amounts of heat and pressure under the earth for presumably many millions of years.

Diamonds are different from other non-metals because:

  • they have an EXTREMELY high melting point
  • they are very hard
  • often are very shiny
  • the carbon bonds in diamonds have 3 to 4 bonds with other carbon atoms
