As the story goes, Jews were not allowed to study Torah during the Greco-Syrian occupation. Jews continued to study but had clay dreidls to play with if discovered and hopefully fool the guards.

No one knows.

Many rabbis have tried to find a historical connection between the dreidel and the Hanukkah story.

One 19th century rabbi proposed that in Ancient times, Jews played with the dreidel in order to fool the Greeks if they were caught studying Torah, which had been outlawed.

The standard explanation is that the letters nun, gimmel, hey, shin, which appear on the dreidel in the Diaspora, stand for nes gadol haya sham--"a great miracle happened there,"while in Israel the dreidel says nun, gimmel, hey, pey, which means "a great miracle happened here."

The dreidel is yet another way of celebrating the miracle of Hanukkah that happened in Israel. Jews use it to play a game involving chocolate coins, or gelt. The 4Hebrewletters on the dreidel stand for a phrase meaning "A great miracle happened there." In Israel the last of the four letters is different, so the phrase becomes "A great miracle happened here."

What is the lyrics for Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel on the recorder?

The lyrics are exactly the same regardless of what instrument is played along with them: I have a little dreidel. I made it out of clay. When it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, then dreidel I shall play. It has a lovely body, with legs so short and thin. When it gets all tired, it drops and then I win! Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, with leg so short and thin. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, it drops and then I win! My dreidel's always playful. It loves to dance and spin. A happy game of dreidel, come play now let's begin. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, it loves to dance and spin. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel. Come play now let's begin. I have a little dreidel. I made it out of clay. When it's dry and ready, dreidel I shall play. Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made you out of clay.
