The Earth's magnetic field (magnetosphere) deflects ionized radiation coming from the Sun and the Cosmos. This radiation is of high enough energy to break apart molecules and could destroy DNA ans RNA so replication of cells (growth and procreation) would be seriously hampered.

It deflects the solar wind which in turns lowers atmospheric loss significantly. In planets like Mars whose magnetoshperes are not as strong or large as the Earth's, most of the atmosphere gets blown away due to the solar wind. Another one is that it protects us from dangerous levels of cosmic radiation.
