Electricity , as a secondary source of energy, is easy to transport and easy to be converted at end energy use point to energy the form needed (as in lighting, heating, industry, transportation, etc.). Electricity by itself as secondary energy source is environmentally clean secondary energy source. Pollution caused by its production depends on the type of the used primary source (coal, oil, gas, nuclear energy, wind, etc.) However, electricity is usually produced in thermal power plants at efficiency less than 50%. So, it is expensive high grade secondary energy source.

Mainly:

  • It is a clean secondary energy source
  • ease of its transmission through electric transmission and distribution grids
  • directly used for lighting, air conditioning, ...etc
  • easiness of its conversion to mechanical, heat, magnetic energy.

Electricity is a secondary source of energy. It is not a primary energy source. We usually, call the primary energy (not the secondary energy) source to be clean energy source or not.

Electricity is considered a convenient energy source for its flexibility and feasibility of its transmission, distribution, and use in various end energy uses.

Electricity is not exactly a source of energy; it is more like an intermediate form of energy. Energy is gathered, for example, at a hydroelectric dam, then converted to energy to transport to individual homes and companies that use it.

The convenience of electricity is that it is relatively easy to transport it over large distances, and then converted to other types of energy at the home - for example, kinetic energy to move some electric motor in a kitchen appliance, microwaves in a microwave oven, converted to heat in a shower, etc.

One inconvenience of electricity is that it can't be stored - to store it, it has to be converted to other types of energy. All energy produced must be used immediately - almost exactly at the moment it is produced.

Is electricity a clean source of energy?

The term clean source of energy refers to only primary energy sources as wind or solar energy. Electricity, by definition, is not a primary energy source. It is a secondary energy source that is could be produced by a clean energy source as wind or any renewable primary energy source or produced by fossil energy source as oil, natural gas, or coal.
