The reason why English is used in Nigeria is because English is the official language of the country, even though there are over 500 other languages also used in Nigeria.

When it came to deciding on the official language, the Nigerian government selected English for several reasons:

  • It was already widely used in the country.
  • English has 'international language' status, and thus helps Nigerians to more readily participate in international affairs.
  • Using English, rather than a tribal language, is a major step towards eliminating any language barriers to social interaction, thus contributing towards building a united population with a common language.
  • Although Nigeria is a multi-ethnic land of wide-ranging cultures, the 'culture' inherent in the English language would also be a significant factor that could foster closer cultural identity amongst all people and groups of people in Nigeria.
  • English is a major part of the contemporary heritage of Nigeria, the country having been a British colony for many generations, i.e. from 1800 to 1960. Nigeria gained its independence from Britain on October 1st, 1960
  • Nigerians have a great fondness for Britain, the 'home' of the English language - one significant reason for their 'attachment' to Britain being the national benefits to Nigerians that resulted from the anti-slavery laws enacted by Britain in 1807.
