I'm assuming your talking about the Expedition trim package on the Ford Explorer when you say 1996 ? because the Expedition model first year was called a 1997 . Anyway , it sounds like a leaking brake hose

it sounds like your exhaust manifold gaskets are leaking or you half a hole in your Y pipe
Are you sure it's a leaking exhaust? If you think it is, then get a new exhaust fitted! But are you sure it isn't diesel smoke coming off the exhaust due to leaking seals on one or more injectors? That's the favorite!
If black smoke is coming out of the exhaust of a 1986 Ford Ranger, it is likely burning oil. It's possible that a seal is leaking in the engine.
