Fat is the body's way of storing food energy for times of famine.

In today's society, most of us have more than enough food. But evolutionarily speaking, our bodies haven't yet caught on to that fact. So we overeat to store food we'll probably never need. Which is why instances of obesity have grown worldwide over the last century or more.
