Food webs and food chains are different things, but a food web is a more accurate representation of most animals' diet. A food chain is simply a line of one of each type of animal, so it might have one producer, one primary consumer, one secondary consumer etc, whilst a web is more complex, and represents more animals.

For example:

Food Chain: Cabbage-->snail-->Thrush-->sparrowhawk

Food Web: http://www.bigelow.org/edhab/fitting_algae.html (pictures and more info here)

Food webs include multiple food chains, so they encompass more animals and plants. In the real world you can't single out any one food chain, so it is much more realistic to look at the big picture.

Because chain implies linearity: A eats only B, B eats only C, C eats only D, etc.

A web allows branches and cross connections and so forth.

Why is there usually no more than four or five stages in a food chain?

There cannot be too many links in a food chain. Food chains always begin with a plant and end with an animal. If there are more than 4 or 5 links in the chain , there will not be enough food for the animals at the end of the chain.

What is more energy available in the first link of a food chain than in the forefront of the same food chain?

because it needs a lot of energy to get the food chain to cycle.

What are the features of a food chain?

A food chain can be displayed with text, images, or other media - in this case, it is shown in text. Food chains will always have at least three levels, and no more than four - each level never having more than one living thing in it (per food chain). For example, this is a valid food chain: [ Grass ] -> [ Zebra ] -> [ Lion ]

Does the top of the food chain have the same amount as the bottom?

Typically, the food chain is like a pyramid more than a chain. The lower on the food chain an organism is, the more of them that there are, because the lower organisms are usually smaller so it takes more of them to feed the larger ones at the top. ie sardines eat plankton, tuna eat sardines, and sharks eat the tuna.....each one is bigger than the other so there are more plankton than tuna, and more tuna than sharks.
