The word 'gold' is from the old English word, 'gold'. This word was taken from the really old German word, 'gulth', which most likely meant 'pretty and yellow'.

The Latin scientists used the word, 'Aurum' for gold. It is for this reason that the chemical abbreviation for gold is "Au".
