In the early 80s, it was disco. The rest of the 80s was dominated by hard rock, glam rock, and hairbands. The 80s were much more than rock. The decade that most clearly defines the 80s would be pop. This is the era of Madonna, Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, and the stomping grounds of the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. It is hard to pick a more commercialized musical decade. What's so ironic about this commercialization, is the fact that the majority of 1980s music was inspired by the decommercializtion of music by experimenting with wild blends of all sorts of music with plenty of experimentation. Hence the birth of "New Wave." Pop definitely was the ruler of the airwaves, and that new thing called MTV. However, the 80s were also the beginning of the independent artist movement, and you saw the birth/defining direction of Rap (Beastie Boys), Reggae (Blondie), Metal (Motley Crue), and many other common genres. http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/80smusic.html
