What type of gas is natural gas?

Natural gas is mainly methane with some small amount of ethane, propane and butane. Heavier components, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are removed before distribution to users.

Why does water have a significantly higher boiling point and than methane?

Water has stronger hydrogen bonds than Methane. More energy is required to break them, hence the difference in boiling point

How was methane discovered?

Methane was discovered in 1776 by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta when he collected the gas produced by decaying organic matter in a marsh. He then named the gas "marsh gas" or "flammable air" before it was later identified as methane.

Why don't methane and oxygen react immediately?

For any chemical reaction, there is what is called an activation energy that is required to make that reaction happen. Methane and oxygen both exist as molecules in which there are molecular bonds. In methane, the carbon is bonded to the hydrogen, and in diatomic oxygen, the two oxygen atoms are bonded to each other. So, before the oxygen can bond to the carbon and the hydrogen, all of those existing bonds have to be broken. Once the process begins it is self-sustaining, because it releases a lot of energy, more than enough to break the existing bonds in methane and oxygen. But you still need the activation energy to get things started. This would normally come in the form of a spark. It just takes one small spark to set off an explosion, if you have a mixture of methane and oxygen. Or a pilot light, to light your gas stove.

What element is Jupiter composed of?

Jupiter is a gas giant planet and the largest planet in our solar system. We can only see the cloud tops of Jupiter's atmosphere but the planet has a molten Iron/Nickel core and perhaps a rocky mantle. This is then covered by an ocean made out of metallic hydrogen before the thick atmosphere starts. The atmosphere is made up of82% hydrogen 18% helium. Although there are traces of every other element.

What is natural gas a mixture of?

It's a mixture of hydrogen, carbon and other 'trace' elements. Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly including varying amounts of other higher alkanes, and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, or helium. All is removed from the methane before it is used. We have from 250-100 years of natural gas left depending of the amount of usage.

What has the author William Henry Millett written?

William Henry Millett has written: 'A study of the accuracy of the determination of sulfate as barium sulfate before and after the removal of metals precipitated by hydrogen sulfide ..' -- subject(s): Analytic Chemistry, Barium sulphate, Chemistry, Analytic, Hydrogen sulphide, Precipitation (Chemistry), Quantitative

What makes natural gas?

The natural gas supplied by your utility company is almost pure methane. This is a chemical compound of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. The stuff that comes out of a natural gas well is a mixture of hydrocarbons (mainly methane, ethane, propane, and butane) and impurities. All of the stuff besides methane is separated out (and something smelly like mercaptan added in) before the natural gas is sold to consumers.

What was the early atmosphere of Earth like before plants were developed?

Hostile, at least to life as we know it. It contained high levels of carbon dioxide, as well as water, hydrogen sulphide. Life was made up of single-celled organisms that reduced the hydrogen sulphide to gain energy and oxygen was toxic to them. Eventually single-celled organisms that performed photosynthesis evolved. These got their energy from light and converted carbon dioxide to sugars and oxygen.Plants producing oxygen caused the first major extinction of life on earth as all the creatures that couldn't cope with oxygen were killed.
