It is utterly misleading to say that Islam is a violent religion. Was Jesus Christ (May peace and blessings be upon him) a violent man? Did he preach violence? Surely NOT. Why have then Christians been bombarding Muslim countries like Iraq and Afghanistan and killing millions of innocent citizens? Should we say, Why is Christianity a violent religion? Surely, Christianity is not a violent religion-some of people who claim to be Christians are violent.
Similarly, Islam is not a violent religion-some of the people who claim to be the Muslims are violent. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are heavenly religions given to mankind by Almighty God. He is kind, merciful and loving. How can He be violent to His own creation? Islam means -peace, complete and unconditional surrender to the will of Almighty God. Almighty God says in the holy Qur'an: "He who kills one innocent human being (He doesn't say an innocent Muslim), Kills all human beings. He who saves the life of one innocent human being, saves all human beings." How can a Muslim be violent? Kings, Emperors, Dictators, certain Priests and religious leaders might have been preaching violence for their vested interests. No religion preaches violence.

Islam is never a violent religion. Islam calls for peace and justice and good morals. If Islam calls for defending your lands and properties (called military Jihad) it does not mean violence. If Islam calls Muslims to struggle within themselves to be in the right path of God and not to commit sins, it does not mean violence, Islam calls for peace and tolerance. Refer to questions below.
