Horses will not die because they grow to weak to get back up. Horses that lay down too long can do great damage to their internal structures due to their weight. The weight press down would first start to do damage to the nervous system and can result in permenant paralysis in certain areas. Death would result from suffucation due to the weight on the lungs or interference with the heart.
A lot when it is sunny out they will lay down and "sun bathe" and they will do this until they are hungry or they are just done lying down. If your horse it lying down all day then maybe check for collic but if he/she is healthy then maybe that is just the way he/she is. Hope this helps :D
