a.m. and p.m. are the Latin initials for 'Ante Meridian' and 'Post Meridian'.

Translated into modern English, 'Ante Meridian' means 'Before Noon'. and 'Post Meridian' means 'After Noon'.

In modern English , the whole world uses English as a second language ; it is a universal language.

Historically, Latin performed the same function, of being the universal language.

NB Do not use am/pm for 12 o'clock midday nor midnight.

When one writes 12;00 am meaning 12 o'clock midday. Because 12 o'clock is neither before noon not after noon. It is 12 noon or 12 midnight.
