Alocholics Anonymous is not intended to keep a member anonymous from other members... in fact, the opposite is true, fellowship being a big part. Members are kept "anonymous" from press and the public. So you wouldn't hear someone talking on the street about how So-and-so being in the program, or even admitting their own involvement (except to other members). It's to protect people from the stigma that existed about alkies when AA started (and that still exists to a slightly lesser extent).

Is alcoholics anonymous a cult?

No. Alcoholics Anonymous is a Spiritual Fellowship of alcoholics with the Primary Purpose of staying sober and helping other alcoholics achieve freedom from alcohol (sobriety) and recover from alcoholism through the teaching and practicing of the Twelve Steps - which is a Program designed to bring about a spiritual awakening in the person practicing it thereby solving all of their problems - including alcoholism. The success rate of the fellowship is very low since very few members actually qualify as alcoholics under AA' "description of the alcoholic" detailed in first forty three pages of the book, "Alcoholics Anonymous" - the volume after which the AA Fellowship was named - while the success rate of those who practice and teach the Twelve Steps to other alcoholics is nearly one hundred percent. The reason why the success rate is low is because of the nature of the illness of alcoholism the individuals' recovery requires that the individual actually puts into practice the suggestions that AA suggests and the problem being that the suffering alcoholic decides to stop getting help and drifts away into the hell of alcohol abuse again if someone is willing to go to vertually any length to stay sober they will but the leg work has to be put in by them. Nobody gets anything out of life for doing nothing after all.

Who started alcoholics anonymous?

There were approximately one hundred co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill Wilson of East Dorset Vt and New York City - and Bob Smith of Akron, Ohio were the first two followed by Bill Dodsen of Akron and Clarence Snyder of Cleveland and on. Bill Wilson was sober for five months in 1934 when he went to Akron, Ohio for business. He was staying at a hotel and had a strong obsession to drink. He decided on having three drinks - no more. Right then and there he thought of what his sponsor, Ebby Thacher had tol dhim about helping others. In that isnstant the desire to drink was removed. he thanked God and commences to begin telephoning local clergymen in the area who might refer his services. He was referred to Henrietta Sieberling who referred him to Anne Smith who was married to an alcoholic doctor named Bob Smith. The following day he met Smith. They immediately began searching for others an subsequently recruited other alcoholics one by one many of whom were admitted in local hospitals. Alcoholics Anonymous grew person by person from then on to what it is today. Alcoholics Anonymous was founded by two men. There names are Bill Wilson and Sam Shoemaker, and the program was found by these two in 1935 to help people who had drinking problems.
