There are two main issues with discussing Islamic History:
1) Singular Perspective: History is a thematic analysis of certain events while excluding others. The modern history taught to Muslims in many countries completely excludes actual writings and positions from individuals who differ from the pre-established perspective in Islamic texts. For example, Muslims hold that they treated minorities well because their texts tell them as much without considering that texts published by those minorities in the same period complained of mistreatment or inequality.
2) Religious Tag: Muslims are not alone in clinging to an idealized version of their history with a single dominant pre-established perspective. However, in most cases, the root of this idealized history is based in some form of patriotism and while arguing against patriotism is difficult, it can be achieved. When someone attaches a religious tag to a historical interpretation, it permits them to fail to consider other points of view by claiming that God enjoins this type of serious questioning.
