All features contained within National Parks are protected by federal law. The National Park Service was mandated by Congress in 1916 "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein." This includes anyhistoric or cultural artifacts (such as bullet casings, arrowheads, pottery, or historic carvings), as well as natural objects including antlers, pine cones, and even rocks. Because the National Parks are owned by all Americans, by stealing from parks, you are stealing from the American People.

An example: There used to be a magnificent and huge petrified log in Yellowstone National Park. Today there is not much left because for many years people would take "souvenir" pieces of the petrified wood with them. Parks like Yellowstone receive 4 million visitors a year; imagine if each of them took a piece of the park with them. There would be nothing left for future generations to enjoy. Parks are a legacy we enjoy today because people in the past cared enough to protect them for us, and we must continue to care for them for future generations. This is the second critical piece of the NPS mandate, "to provide for the enjoyment of the same [natural, historic, and wild features] in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."
