As a teacher you need to understand how children develop because this also effects the way they learn. Brain development happens in stages and understanding this can tell you many things about the child you are teaching. For instance, a child who counts in their fingers is in the concrete stage of brain development and at 5, 6, or even 10 years old this is normal behavior, but if you have a person who is 15 and still counting on their fingers they need help. The 15 year old should be in abstract thinking and beyond needing to count on their fingers. If you didn't know this as a teacher you wouldn't know that you needed to help the student.

Some students also have delays in speech and other areas as well as problems in perceptual motor development and without having this knowledge again you wouldn't know why they aren't learning and how to help them. Understanding the developmental theoriesand stages of development makes you a better teacher and gives you the tools to help your students to learn better.

Being aware of the general timeline a child reaches a developmental milestone helps to determine if they are in the range of what is typical for their age group. It also aids in knowing what skill most often will follow. This is helpful in presenting motivational opportunities to challenge a child's growth and continue to develop in all skill areas.
