Why is it important for christians to be part of a community?

There is a peculiar word that is part of Christianity called fellowship. My experience is that this fellowship is an integral part of being a Christian. And we fellowship and commune with other Christians. As a group, Christians tend to be like minded people. Within the Christian community there is a diverse range of beliefs and ideas, however, we share a belief in God and Jesus Christ. This binds us. So, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are family.

We are always in a community of some kind. Communities are made up of the people we are with regularly. Our families are communities, in school our classes are a community, in sports our team; we are all apart of communities in many different ways and those can build us up and make us better or they can tear us down and leave us broken.

As a Christians we need the community of other believers who can build us up, who can call us out when we sin, and who will love us no matter what. Paul tells us to "not forsake our meeting together" as he knew that we need the support of community to continue to grow in our relationship with Jesus.

In a healthy Christian community we find strength in numbers and it makes our walk with God easier when we have many people who love us and support us. We need this Christian community to help us recharge, be renewed, and refreshed.

It is also important for us to be a part of our local communities as well. We are called to be the hands and feet of God and He uses us to reach out to the people we are in contact with. We need to be attending to the needs of our various local communities and actively loving our neighbors by using our gifts, talents, and strengths. Making a positive difference in the world starts at home and goes out from there. What are you doing to be a positive light in your community?
