Blood contains waste products. The kidneys are two of three organs that remove waste products from the blood. (The liver is the third. Actually, the liver filters byproducts of various compounds, such as alcohol, producing other, more useful products, such as sugar. It also produces bile, used in digestion.) Without the kidneys, these waste products would accumulate and poison us. The resulting output of the kidneys is urine, which is accumulated in the bladder for periodic voiding by the process known (scientifically) as micuration, otherwise known as urination.

Waste products need to be taken away from the cells by blood. They are too toxic to the cells. Brain cells are particularly sensitive to the toxic products of metabolism.
