why is it important to have drainage for the outdoor unit
I don't know of to many cons about owning a heat pump. Pro's: lower heating bills acts as an air conditioner in the summer Below 30*F outdoor temp they are worthless.
About 10% during the outdoor temperature from about 40 degrees to 20 degrees. Not a lot beyond those temperatures that make frost on the outdoor coil...assuming you have a unit with a good electronic defrost control.
Jose Vallejo invented the Geothermal Heat pump
the heat pump is cheaper but the pump does not work as well when its below 40 out side thats when you want to run heat strip

On the outdoor coil
Condenser coil
Yes both indoor and outdoor fans will operate, the only time 1 will stop in heat mode is in defrost the outdoor one stops briefly to defrost better,

With heat pumps supply air temp will vary with outdoor temp. The colder it gets outside the less efficient the heat pump will be (colder supply air).

The thermostat turns on the heat pump and indoor fan. If an electrical sub circuit to or within the heat pump fails or locks out the heat pump, the outdoor part will not turn on.
It is vital that heat pumps be cleaned regularly since they collect a great deal of outdoor dirt and debris. Every year, the power should be turned off to the heat pump and the front screen should be removed. Typically, this is just the removal of several screws. Once the front filter is removed, use an outdoor vacuum to thoroughly clean leaves, pine needles, grass clippings and other outdoor debris from the screen. Then vacuum around the heat pump's fan blades. Finally, reaffix the front screen. This cleaning will allow the pump to work more efficiently.
The heat pump will have an additional component in the outdoor unit, a reversing valve. Additional wiring is also required for a heat pump to operate. (more than the 2 wires used to operate an a/c condensing unit) These are not the only differences, but the easiest to visually spot. lc
