suncream hat shirt/cover up
Thousands of people have been burned by the Sun. Some have died. This is why we are advised to wear suncream and wear protective clothing when out in the Sun
beacause it stops you getting skin cancer when you are older! plus you dont get burned, just a healthy , glowing tan!

the melanin helps protect your skin, but it is not very strong. It can protect you on a fairly warm day, but when its hot, you really should wear suncream/sunscrean. They come in many variaties, serums that sink in instantly, roll-on's that are quite handy, or just plain suncream in squeasy bottle,my favourite:) becuase its simple. If you really want to protect yourself, the hotter the day, the higher the factor. I wear a 30 on average, especially on holidays.
The reason that you need to wear sunscreen when you ski is because the sun's rays hit the snow and reflect on your skin to a point where you can get a burn worse than that right from the sun.
You can always try making homemade sunscreen. There are recipes around the web that work quite wonderful. Also, I am allergic to suncream also. I find it's easier to wear a wide brim hat and long sleeves. You can find clothes that are very lightweight so they are more comfortable during the summer. If it's a younger child, this may not be the easiest thing to convince them to do though. The homemade suncream works quite well.
Yes.
The higher the better-for fair skin, at least factor 30. For dark or olive skin, foundation is often factor 15, but if not then a factor 15 suncream should protect you.
