because if they dident then non of the vitamins or minerals from the food eaten could be extracted and taken around the body, also if they dident digest the food would stay in the stomach and just stay there, therefore eventually they would not be able to eat any more (as the food is just sitting in the stomach and it will fill because its not going anywhere) which will mean they will die, also if food is left rotting in the stomach then the animal would also gain poisons from all the decay and this would be sent around the body and also eventually kill the animal.
