Using a power switch or forcing a power off video physical means means you're shutting down a system that the OS might not be prepared for. Meaning it may not have done it's clean up, it might leave temp files in place, half written, hard drive heads don't park, devices do not power down correctly.
It can cause all manner of issues. Most modern OS's will be able repair that sort of stuff but not always. It's always a last resort.
The switch on the back is the switch for the power supply only. The computer boots from the main power switch on the front. This particular method of switching was introduced with the ATX power supplies.

It's a latching push button switch. To operate this type of switch, you press the button, which then latches into place. To switch off, you press the button again, which returns to its home position. Just like the power switch on your TV or HI FI.
You flip the on-off switch. It may be a button, or a knob.
The normal position of the inertia switch button is down , if it has popped up then the switch is tripped and no power is going to the electric fuel pump
If you mean the extra switch on the drivers side power window control it cuts power to the passenger side window switch. Handy if you have kids.
The ps3 has no reset button but it has three (technically 4) buttons. Eject (arrow), Power button (O/|) {this button also functions as the force turn-off button, just hold it and it will automatically turn off your system after a matter of around 10 seconds [as the ps3 says]}, and the automatic power switch (in the back).
If it has power mirrors, the switch is on the door.
not one
The power button on most desktop computers is a momentary (push to make) switch. Two wires run from this switch to a small connector that pushes onto two pins on your motherboard. You can buy a replacement switch online from many good suppliers. However, if your computer case also has a reset switch, as many do, you can save yourself time, trouble and money by simply plugging the reset switch onto the pins where the power switch would normally fit. Use your reset button to turn the computer on and off. In an extreme case, it is possible to power on the computer by shorting across the two power switch pins with any metal object for a moment. However, this is not for the faint-hearted and if a mistake is made can potentially lead to serious damage to your system.
A power window relay switch relays the power from the car's battery, to the switch itself, and then to the window motor. When pressing the button inside of the car it allows the power to go from the relay switch to the motor and roll the window up or down.
