Factories pollute the air by pumping out chemicals that are harmful for all the living things. That is why there is acid rain and global warming. There is a lot of science involved in this, but I don't feel like doing eight hours of research, so I will just put what I know down. Factories can pollute the environment through thermal pollution, chemical pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, for a few examples. Thermal pollution is when hot water is dumped into cool water in a river, lake, pond or bay. The difference in temperatures can promote algae growth, kill of native fish or wildlife, or it might cause disruptions in the water that causes the water to change temperature, also causing major problems with wildlife. Chemical Pollution is when chemicals are exposed to the environment, either by dumping them into sewage plants, where excess waste ends up in the ground. A good example of this is nuclear waste. This needs to be treated carefully or else it could completely destroy an area. Air pollution is when pollution is mixed in with the air. (Self-Explanatory) Noise pollution is when a factory causes a lot of noise... enough to effect the surrounding environment.

Fumes and gases from factories pollute the air. Acidic gaseous oxides liberated by the chimneys of the factories cause acid rain. Acid rain causes soil and water pollution and damages historical monument. Sound (loud voice or noise) produced by machines in factories causes sound pollution. Hot water liberated by many factories affects life under water and cause water pollution. Thus, urbanization and industrialization have leads to various types of pollution. Air pollution can be checked by enforcing strict laws against the polluters.

A factory that emits contaminants may have to reduce or eliminate the loss of these materials because:

  • it is against the law
  • it is harming people o the environment
  • it is bad public relations

To do this they first have to determine what pollutants they emit. This is done by sampling the air and gases leaving the plant smoke stacks, the water leaving by the plant sewers and the solid wastes going to the disposal sites.

For each of the pollutants they then determine why it is being created and why it is being discharged. This is usually the work of engineers and chemists. In many cases the pollution they emit is actually valuable materials that can be recovered and sold. In other cases the pollution represents wastes of materials or energy that are costing the factory money.

For each pollutant there is a method of reduction. These include:

  • changing the process that makes the pollution
  • removing the pollution from tha air water or waste by chemical or physical means
  • directing the pollution containing materials to another process to recover and reuse the pollutant.

Most factories run by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) or by using electricity made in the same way. Burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide as well as sulphur and nitrous dioxides. These all pollute the atmosphere in different ways.

Yes. Factories sent tons of smoke and co2 gas in the air each day, especially the large ones in china. They were the cause of global warming since 1800s.
