-------------------------
The English alphabet starts with "A" because the Greek alphabet, which is the principle source of our alphabet, starts with "A."
Actually it because a is for Adam which was the first person on earth so :P
it starts with letter A in alphabet because according to the history as God is the begining the Alpha.... A starts with the first person.
Our English alphabet came from the Roman alphabet, used for Latin. But the Latin alphabet had no J, V, W or Y (The V symbol was a U sound). The alpha was the first letter of the Greek alphabet, Alpha and Beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, give us the word "alphabet." Omega is the last letter in the Greek alphabet. So "the Alpha and the Omega" is a common Greek idiom for "the first and the last". Note that the New Testament was originally written in Greek.
Interestingly enough, all of the alphabets in the western world begin with a letter equivalent to A, including Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, Slavic, Cyrillic (Russian), Norse, Swedish, Danish, and Finnish. Many of these end with Z, but not all of them.
The English alphabet, like the English language, stems in a very large part from latin. While no one is sure how it was pronounced, the letters were (basically) the same order as the modern English alphabet. But Latin/Etruscan as well as other Italic languages are closely related to Greek, who they stole a lot of ideas from, including parts of their alphabet. The Romans, (who spoke Latin) took their language with them all over the world as they expanded their empire, resulting in the 'Romance' languages we have today (Spainish, Portugese, French, Italian, Romanian and Catalan), but Latin also infected languages like German and English with a few influences here and there. The word 'Alphabet' actually comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha, which uppercase looks just like an 'A', and Beta, which looks like the modern 'B'. But its important to remember that Latin/Etruscan and Greek all stemmed from Pheonician, which came from Proto-Canaanite, which came from God-only-Knows-where. 'A' has simply been the first letter of the alphabet for a very long time.
I hope that helped at all, in I hope I didn't ramble!

There is another theses. It's build upon the idea that Etruscans were Turks. The Etruscan Marsiliana tablet has been deciphered in Proto-Turkish and it's not an alphabet. They are not letters but Turkic runes. It can be read as: The ways (signs) that can be used the tell people about the victories that are achived by the will of Tengri (God)
AT :: ÖK :: ODUç :: EB-IL :: UQ-UN-UŞ-UG :: OL-UM-UN :: OQ-UŞ-UN-UP-ULT :: ES-IN-IR :: EZ-IS-IG :: UQ-US-UN-UC At ök oduç ebil uqunuşug olumun oquşunupult esinir ezisig uqusunuc.
The sentence starts with At (so called alpha) (horse, throw; the reunification of human soul with Tengri) continues with Ok (so called beta) (Gök Tengri; Celestial God) and continues on. Turkic languages has a unique agglutination. New words are created by combining many different root words and combined root words chance chracteristics when new words are created. --- Simple answerEnglish, like most other languages, uses the Roman alphabet, which begins with A.

We use the Latin alphabet, which was based on the Greek Alphabet, which was inspired by the Hebrew Alphabet.
It's really not similar at all. The Phoenician alphabet has 22 consonants and no vowels. The only similarity is that the English alphabet is a version of the Latin alphabet which was adapted from the Greek alphabet alphabet which was adapted from the Phoenician alphabet.
If you are asking what alphabet was used in English prior to the Latin alphabet, the answer is none.
