Dalet or Daled (ד) which is pronounced D

More information about Dalet

Dalet (dāleth, also spelled Daleth or Daled) is the fourth letter of the Semitic alphabets, including:

- Phoenician Dālet ?
- Hebrew 'Dālet ד
- Aramaic Dālath ?
- Ugaritic Delta ?
- Syriac Dālaṯ ܕ
- Arabic Dāl د (in abjadi order; 8th in modern order)

. The sound value of Dalet is a voiced alveolar plosive [d].

The letter is based on a glyph of the Middle Bronze Age alphabets, probably called dalt "door" (door in Modern Hebrew is delet), ultimately based on a hieroglyph depicting a door,

The Phoenician letter gave rise to the Greek delta (Δ), Latin D and the equivalent in the Cyrillic Д.

The Manx alphabet has no x, z

The Irish alphabet has no j, k, q, v, w, x, y, z

The Scots Gaelic alphabet has no j, k, q, v, w, x, y, z

The Welsh alphabet has no j, k, q, v, x, z

The Breton alphabet has no c, q, x

The history of the alphabet is believed to have begun in Ancient Egypt, more than a millennium into the history of writing. The first consonantal alphabet found has emerged around 2000 BCE to represent the language of Semitic workers in Egypt, and was derived from the alphabetic principles of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. Nearly all alphabets in the world today either descend directly from this development or were inspired by its design

The Latin alphabet is used for all official languages of Zimbabwe, including Shona, Ndebele and English.

There are two languages that are candidates for the world's shortest alphabet, depending on how you define the sounds of the language:

The Central dialect of Rotokas possesses one of the world's smallest phoneme inventories. The alphabet consists of twelve letters, representing eleven phonemes. Rotokas has a vowel-length distinction (that is, all vowels have a short and long counterpart) but otherwise lacks distinctive suprasegmental features such as contrastive tone or stress.

The Pirahã language is one of the phonologically simplest languages known, comparable to Rotokas and Hawaiian. There is a claim that Pirahã has as few as ten phonemes, one fewer than Rotokas, but this requires analyzing [k] as an underlying /hi/. Although such a phenomenon is odd cross-linguistically, Ian Maddieson has found in researching Pirahã data that /k/ does indeed exhibit an unusual distribution in the language.[citation needed]

The 'ten phoneme' claim also does not consider the tones of Pirahã, at least two of which are phonemic (marked by an acute accent and either unmarked or marked by a grave accent in Everett), bringing the number of phonemes to at least twelve. Sheldon (1988) claims three tones, high (¹), mid (²) and low (³).

One was an alphabet - sympbols combine to make words.

Cunieform is syllabic.

in the English alphabet it is the letter "Y"

Depends on the language. In English, it's E.

If you're using this for hangman, like I am, you are 10 times cooler than you thought you were.

During WW1 a radio transmission was broadcast 'Send reinforcement's, we are going to advance', however, what was heard at the other end was 'Send four-and-sixpence, we are going to a dance'. It was recognised that the use of phonetic alphabet was required in order to clarify any misunderstandings, especially as a 'B' may sound like a 'D' - so in order to do this, this phonetic alphabet was used:-

A - AlphaB - BravoC - DeltaE - EchoF - FoxtrotG - GolfH - HotelI - IndiaJ - JulietK - KiloL - LimaM - MikeN - NovemberO - OscarP - ParaQ - QuebecR - RomeoS - SierraT - TangoU - UniformV - VictorW - WhiskeyX - X-rayY - YankeeZ - Zulu
