Gas is extremely flammable, which means that their particles can be excited easily causing kinetic energy (vibration within particles) which eventually heats up to cause fire.
As a gas has particles that carry such great kinetic energy not only they light on fire faster, they move through other particles as strong as steel. Because of the movement the gas passed through the air so fast and multiplys so quickly the air, which is now gas is extremely dangerous. Then come along a spark and before you know it the whole diameter that the gas has had time to spread to is on fire!
Luckily when gas (depending on the amount) reaches as far as it can due to the lack of particles it just stops where it is, these distances tend not to be to far. But it is still dangerous, you could easily kill yourself if you are standing to close.
