The light from our own sun takes roughly 8 minutes to travel the distance to us. That means when you look up at the sun (don't do that without special glasses) you are looking at the sun as it was 8 minutes earlier. Or you can say you are seeing the sun 8 minutes back in time. The stars which are far away galaxies, the light takes years to reach us. So the light we see at night now can be 100 years old. Or we are seeing that galaxy as it was 100s of years ago.

This is usually referring to the stars. If you're looking at a star that is twenty light years away, you are seeing it as it was twenty years ago. If it blew up right now, you wouldn't know for twenty years.

It can't. There is no such thing as a time machine. I think you are talking about looking at a planet or star that is millions of light years away. The star you are looking at may no longer exist, but the light from before it's demise is still getting to earth, so it is like looking back in time.

You are looking at light which takes time to travel. If you look at Alpha Centauri, you are seeing it as it was just over 4 years ago as that is how long the light takes to reach us across space.
